From Corporate Success to Community Activism
Tansy McNulty, a former corporate executive, has embarked on a mission to end police violence by 2038. After a decade in Corporate America, McNulty founded 1 Million Madly Motivated Moms (1M4) in 2018. This organization aims to prevent tragedies and keep Black families intact.
McNulty’s transformation from corporate leader to community advocate was sparked by a series of tragic events. In 2016, while pregnant with her first child, she returned from vacation to news of three Black men killed by police. The lack of acknowledgment at her workplace fueled her desire for meaningful change.
Empowering Black Mothers to Drive Systemic Change
1M4 focuses on harnessing the power of Black mothers to combat police violence. McNulty believes Black mothers have the greatest stake in resolving this systemic issue. She told ESSENCE, “It is important that Black mothers fuel the work to end police violence since we have the greatest vested interest in truly ending this systemic issue.”
The organization recognizes the often-overlooked impact on Black women during incidents of police brutality. 1M4 aims to provide financial support and resources to these unseen victims. McNulty emphasizes the challenges faced by mothers in the aftermath of such tragedies.
Innovative Approaches to Prevention and Safety
Rather than solely focusing on accountability, 1M4 prioritizes prevention strategies. The organization has developed a groundbreaking directory called The Right Response. This resource lists 250 alternative response teams across the nation for mental health and substance use emergencies.
McNulty shared, “With at least 25% of police violence deaths involving people who have a mental health or disability need, we knew it was important and timely to provide this information free and easily accessible.” Additionally, 1M4 partners with tech startups to offer safety solutions through mobile apps.
The Vision Behind 1 Million Madly Motivated Moms
The name 1 Million Madly Motivated Moms carries significant meaning. McNulty explained to Business Insider, “‘Madly’ is a play on the stereotype of the ‘angry Black woman,’ but we are saying ‘madly’ to mean intently and passionately.” The organization’s 20-year timeline aims to empower the next generation to tackle systemic issues.
McNulty’s ultimate goal is to create a better world for her husband and three children. She envisions a future where Black families can feel secure and protected. Through 1M4, she hopes to inspire and mobilize communities to take action against police violence.
A Call to Action for Community Involvement
McNulty encourages community engagement with 1M4’s mission. She states, “I want our community to know that no matter what issue faces us there are Black maternal figures out there working to resolve the problem and transform the system.” Her message emphasizes the power of collective action in creating lasting change.
By focusing on prevention, support, and innovative solutions, 1M4 aims to make a significant impact. McNulty’s journey from corporate success to community advocacy serves as an inspiration for others seeking to make a difference in their communities.
