Dr. Mumba Chalwe-Kaja made history as Zambia’s first female urological surgeon. Her groundbreaking career spans 15 years in medicine and global surgery.
Pioneer in Urological Medicine and Research
“Medicine was always a childhood dream,” Chalwe-Kaja told the Zambian Observer. She chose urology to challenge stereotypes in this male-dominated field.
The surgeon leads research on prostate cancer at the Tropical Disease Research Centre. She currently serves as Head of Urology at Ndola Teaching Hospital.
Academic Excellence and Global Recognition
Chalwe-Kaja earned her doctorate from Rayzan Medical University and a master’s in urology from the University of Zambia. She became Stanford Urology Department’s first William Crain Global Surgical Fellow.
Her achievements earned her the 2018 PUSH Women’s Award and COSECSA Gold Medal for academic excellence.
Advancing African Medical Literature
Her book “The Beginners Guide to Urology” helps demystify the specialty for aspiring doctors. As Associate Editor at The Annals of African Surgery, she shapes continental surgical practices.
She co-founded Stiletto Ink, focusing on adult sexual and reproductive health. The organization expands healthcare access across Zambia.
Vision for African Healthcare
“I dream of an Africa where we are not ‘graded’ on our ability to cook nshima,” she states. Her work promotes feminine excellence in medicine.
Chalwe-Kaja chairs the Women in Surgery Africa board at COSECSA. She advocates for equal opportunities in medical leadership.
