Historic Milestone in Law Enforcement Diversity
The Hampton Police Division (HPD) reached a significant milestone by appointing Lt. Ashley Jenrette as the first-ever Black female lieutenant in the department’s history. This groundbreaking promotion marks a crucial step toward fostering diversity and inclusivity within law enforcement.
“The first Black female lieutenant was something that one day was bound to happen,” Lt. Jenrette said. “The fact that it’s me is something that makes me proud, but more than that, it’s a huge step for the division as far as diversity.”
A Trailblazer’s Journey
Lt. Jenrette’s journey with the HPD began in 2006 as a civilian information clerk, and she transitioned to a police officer in 2008. Through hard work and dedication, she swiftly climbed the ranks, becoming a senior police officer in 2014, a corporal in 2016, and a sergeant in 2019.
“I earned the position of lieutenant, not having anything to do with my race or my gender,” Jenrette mentioned. “It’s the work that I put in over the years. But I didn’t get here alone. There are a lot of women who came before me who helped pave the way and helped guide me.”
Community Engagement and Outreach
A native of Hampton, Lt. Jenrette grew up in an area with a high crime rate, inspiring her to develop strong and positive bonds between residents and the HPD. Her commitment to community service extends beyond her law enforcement duties, as she and her husband, Asa, co-founded the Virginia Eagles Athletic Association in 2016.
“When I look back, I realize that so much of what I do has been about serving others,” Jenrette said. “We see sports as an opportunity to get into individuals’ lives at a young age and hopefully make them productive adults by teaching life skills through sports.”
Reflecting the Community’s Diversity
Lt. Jenrette’s appointment is a significant step toward ensuring that the HPD reflects the diversity of the community it serves. Her promotion sends a powerful message about the department’s commitment to inclusivity and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups within its ranks.
“That’s something police departments need to do a better job of, making the police department reflect the community. I think that Hampton Police Division is doing a great job of that,” Lt. Jenrette said.
Paving the Way for Future Generations
While celebrating her historic achievement, Lt. Jenrette acknowledges the pioneering women who paved the way for her success. She expresses gratitude for the support she has received throughout her journey and vows to pay it forward by mentoring and supporting those who follow in her footsteps.
“I will show my gratitude by trying to pull up those who come behind me,” Lt. Jenrette affirmed.
With her unwavering dedication and commitment to community service, Lt. Ashley Jenrette stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, championing diversity and inclusivity in law enforcement for generations to come.
