A Culinary Tribute to Historic Black Culture
Somerville emerges as more than just a restaurant. Located in View Park-Windsor Hills, this Black-owned establishment pays homage to South Central Los Angeles’ rich cultural heritage. Actress Issa Rae celebrates the venue as an “ode to the classic, artistic past” of the neighborhood.
The restaurant draws deep inspiration from Los Angeles history. Specifically, it highlights the vibrant Black cultural scene spanning 1921 to 1956. During this period, Black musicians created extraordinary musical spaces despite systemic discrimination.
A Collaborative Vision: From Coffee to Fine Dining
Founders Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan have expanded their culinary empire. Originally creators of Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, they now bring Somerville to life. Their journey reflects a commitment to celebrating local community and cultural resilience.
“We wanted to create a 2020s version of that era, but not [necessarily do] a jazz club,” Relan explained.
The restaurant’s design intentionally references the iconic Dunbar Hotel. Its name directly connects to the original Hotel Somerville, a landmark of Black cultural expression. Every element tells a story of artistic triumph.
Gastronomic Excellence: A Menu of Innovation
Chef Geter Atienza crafts an exceptional dining experience. The menu features sophisticated dishes like scallop crudo, duck confit, and collard green lasagna. Guests can complement meals with carefully selected wines and specialty cocktails.
Somerville represents more than a dining destination. It symbolizes community resilience and cultural preservation. By establishing the restaurant on Slauson, Hagos and Relan make a powerful statement about belonging and pride.
A Living Museum of Black Cultural Heritage
The restaurant operates Wednesday through Sunday, offering guests a unique experience. Live music and carefully curated ambiance transport diners through time. Somerville becomes a celebration of Black artistic excellence.
“We’re from here but didn’t know if we would ever open anything here,” Relan shared, reflecting the profound personal significance of their venture.
