Groundbreaking HBCU Investment by Biden-Harris Administration
Vice President Kamala Harris proudly announced a groundbreaking $16 billion investment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by the Biden-Harris Administration.
This record-breaking funding eclipses the previously allocated $7 billion and demonstrates an unprecedented commitment to supporting these esteemed institutions.
In a powerful statement, Harris, a proud Howard University graduate, highlighted the pivotal role HBCUs play in shaping America’s leadership and academic excellence.
She emphasized the profound impact of this transformative investment, which will fund cutting-edge research, long-overdue renovations, mental health resources, and ensure access to every opportunity for students to thrive.
Uplifting Pillars of Academic Excellence
“As a proud graduate of Howard University, I know firsthand that our HBCUs are centers of academic excellence,” shared Harris. “For generations, these anchors of our communities have played a pivotal role in building and contributing to America’s leadership at home and abroad.”
Harris’ personal connection to HBCUs underscores the Administration’s deep understanding of the invaluable contributions these institutions make.
From producing 40% of Black engineers and 50% of Black teachers to nurturing 70% of Black doctors and dentists, HBCUs are engines of opportunity and upward mobility.
Investing in America’s Future Leaders
The $16 billion investment comprises $11.4 billion from 2021 to 2023, stemming from federal grants, contracting awards, and debt relief.
Additionally, over $4 billion will ensure education benefits for veterans and HBCU students needing federal financial aid through Pell Grants and work-study programs.
“We know that when we invest in the success of our HBCUs, we are investing in the strength of our Nation -– today and for generations to come,” Harris affirmed.
As the Biden-Harris ticket seeks reelection, this historic funding signifies their unwavering commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and access to quality education for all Americans.
Strengthening Crucial Community Anchors
HBCUs have long served as anchors in their communities, providing educational opportunities and fostering leadership. The Administration’s investment recognizes the vital role these institutions play in shaping future generations and contributing to America’s continued prosperity.
With this unprecedented support, HBCUs can enhance their research capabilities, infrastructure, and academic programs, ensuring they remain at the forefront of innovation and continue to produce exceptional leaders across all sectors.
