Historic Triumph at 2024 Tony Awards
In a groundbreaking moment, Dede Ayite made history at the 2024 Tony Awards by becoming the first Black woman to win Best Costume Design of a Play. Her triumphant win recognized her exceptional work on the now-closed “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.”
“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” – A Celebration of Culture and Identity
Ayite’s award-winning costumes brought to life the vibrant world of “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” a powerful play set in a bustling Harlem salon. Here, West African immigrant hair braiders created intricate masterpieces while navigating the complexities of being outsiders in a place they called home.
“People like me that are just starting out and aren’t sure and are fearful and just don’t know what it’s going to take, and you don’t know how to find that step to take you forward, so I’m just hopeful that this moment says, ‘Just keep at it,'” Ayite expressed in the Tony Awards pressroom.
A Trailblazer’s Journey to Greatness
Though nominated for her work on multiple shows, including “Appropriate” and “Hell’s Kitchen,” Ayite’s triumph came for “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.”
In her acceptance speech, she graciously thanked her family, collaborators, and the play’s writer, Jocelyn Bioh, for creating “such a beautiful piece.”
Paving the Way for Future Generations
Recognizing the significance of her historic win, Ayite emphasized the importance of representation and perseverance.
“It’s not just about me, but we did it: the community that supports me, the community of people that love me each day and cheer me on,” she shared, underscoring the collective effort behind her achievement.
