Starlight Award Validates SZA’s Musical Journey
At the prestigious 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala, held on June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, SZA was honored with the coveted Hal David Starlight Award. Presented by music legend Nile Rodgers, the accolade celebrated SZA’s exceptional songwriting prowess.
In her acceptance speech, the Grammy award-winning artist expressed her deep gratitude for the recognition, stating:
“It made me feel like a person, that I was doing something worth something. So basically receiving this award validates my entire career.”
SZA candidly acknowledged the challenges she has faced as an artist, reflecting on her journey of self-discovery and growth. Despite the obstacles, her unwavering dedication to songwriting has been a constant source of validation and self-worth.
A Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting
The Hal David Starlight Award is a testament to SZA’s remarkable songwriting achievements. She joins an illustrious list of past honorees, including Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend, Lil Nas X, Ed Sheeran, and Drake.
During the gala, SZA treated the audience to an acoustic performance of her acclaimed single “Snooze” from her album SOS, accompanied by her frequent collaborator Carter Lang.
Honoring Musical Legends
The 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala celebrated the induction of several musical luminaries, including Hillary Lindsey, R.E.M., Steely Dan, Timbaland, and Dean Pitchford.
Timbaland, a long-time collaborator and friend of Missy Elliott, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying, “Thanks for giving me a seat at the table — I’ve been waiting a long time.”
A Legacy of Songwriting Excellence
SZA’s contributions to the art of songwriting have been profound. Her hit single “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved 5x Platinum certification. “The Weekend” reached No. 29 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance.
Moreover, her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on “All the Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack garnered four Grammy nominations, while her duet with Doja Cat, “Kiss Me More,” won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
