Ashleigh Johnson, the star goalkeeper of Team USA’s water polo team, is making waves both in and out of the pool.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Johnson cemented her status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. She made an astounding 80 saves, more than any other goalkeeper in the competition.

“As a Black woman of Caribbean descent in this sport, I definitely feel a special obligation to be a light for little Black and brown girls and boys,” Johnson told NBC News. Her commitment to representation drives her both in and out of the pool.
From Reluctance to Embracing Her Role
Initially, Johnson didn’t fully grasp the importance of her position. “I didn’t understand why it was important for me to be here,” she recalled of her early days on the national team.
However, she soon realized the profound impact she could have. Johnson now leans into her status as a role model, understanding the significance of visibility in traditionally underrepresented sports.
Coach’s Vision: More Than Just Medals
Team USA coach Adam Krikorian recognized Johnson’s potential impact early on. His recruitment pitch focused not on Olympic glory, but on her potential as a role model.
“The sell wasn’t to be an Olympian or win a gold medal,” Krikorian explained. “It was what a great role model she would be.” This vision has come to fruition as Johnson continues to inspire.
