Martha Blanding’s story is one of resilience, determination, and breaking down barriers. This South Central LA native defied the odds to become the first-ever Black American to achieve a remarkable 50-year career with the Walt Disney Company.
From Humble Beginnings to Disneyland Trailblazer
Blanding’s journey began with a simple job search while attending college. Initially hired as a dish-up worker at Disneyland’s Plaza, her life took an unexpected turn when she was offered a position as a tour guide. This chance opportunity set her on a path to making history.
Over the next five decades, Blanding would become the first full-time Black tour guide, the first Black woman in management, the first Black buyer in merchandise, and the first Black female to retire from Disneyland after 50 years of service. Her remarkable achievements culminated in her becoming the first Black Disney Parks employee to be named a Disney Legend.
Determination and Cultural Representation
When asked what kept her motivated and pushing forward, Blanding credits the strong women in her life – her mother, aunt Ella, and aunt Elise. She was driven by a desire to be a good example for her own culture and others, as well as a deep passion for creating magic for cast members and guests.
“I just had this determination to do more, do better, continue to do more, and be a good example for my own culture and others,” Blanding shared. “I just couldn’t stop.”
Navigating Challenges and Embracing Change
Blanding’s pioneering journey was not without its challenges. As one of the first Black leaders at Disneyland, she faced adversity and the need to pave the way for greater diversity and representation.
However, Blanding has witnessed the company’s evolution, noting that while there is still room for improvement, Disney has made significant strides in supporting Black Lives Matter and championing diversity across all groups.
Achieving Disney Legend Status
When Blanding learned she had been named a Disney Legend, alongside esteemed individuals like Angela Bassett and Harrison Ford, she was left speechless. The honor was a remarkable recognition of her trailblazing career and the impact she has had on the company and its guests.
“It’s just amazing. I am speechless, and I’m never speechless,” Blanding shared. “I am trying to accept it and own it.”
