The Obama Foundation has revealed a breathtaking new addition to the future Obama Presidential Center. World-renowned Ethiopian-American artist Julie Mehretu’s massive glass artwork now graces the Museum Building’s north facade. This 83-foot-tall masterpiece, titled “Uprising of the Sun,” promises to inspire visitors and the South Side Chicago community.
Monumental Glass Art Brings Obama’s Vision to Life
Mehretu’s creation spans an impressive 83 feet by 25 feet. It features 35 abstract, painted glass panels that form a vibrant series. The artwork draws inspiration from President Obama’s speech at the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches.
President Obama praised Mehretu’s contribution, saying, “For her to be a part of what we hope will be a transformative institution… is a wonderful opportunity for us.” The piece reflects on Obama’s historical legacy while aiming to inspire future generations.
Julie Mehretu: Bridging Cultures Through Art
Julie Mehretu’s background uniquely positions her for this project. Born to an Ethiopian father and American mother, she brings a global perspective to her work. Mehretu’s art often explores contemporary social issues and individual experiences.
“I wanted to honor Chicago’s history and President Obama’s legacy by telling a story about how change happens,” Mehretu explained. She hopes the artwork will resonate with diverse audiences, from Chicago grandparents to children in Addis Ababa.
Innovative Techniques Bring “Uprising of the Sun” to Life
This project marks Mehretu’s first foray into glass art. She collaborated with Franz Mayer Studio to bring her vision to life. The team used various techniques, including hand painting, freehand airbrushing, and ceramic melting colors.
The result is a stunning visual narrative. It showcases Mehretu’s signature style of layered, abstract imagery. The piece invites viewers to reflect on history and contemplate the future.
Art as a Catalyst for Change at the Obama Presidential Center
The Obama Foundation sees art as a powerful tool for inspiration and connection. CEO Valerie Jarrett emphasized, “President and Mrs. Obama believe that art is an essential part of inspiring the next generation of leaders.”
When completed in Spring 2026, the Center will feature over 20 original artworks. Most will be accessible to the public free of charge. This commitment to art aligns with the Center’s mission to empower and unite communities.
A Growing Legacy of Public Art and Inspiration
“Uprising of the Sun” joins previously announced works by other renowned artists. These include the late Chicago artist Richard Hunt’s “Book Bird” sculpture and Maya Lin’s “Seeing Through the Universe” water feature.
Together, these pieces will create a dynamic, inspiring environment at the Obama Presidential Center. They reflect the Obamas’ vision of using art to connect people and spark positive change in the world.
