Veteran Democratic Congresswoman Lucy McBath has reclaimed her seat representing Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, securing a decisive 75% of the vote. The victory marks a return to the seat she previously held from 2019 to 2022 before being forced to run in a different district due to Republican-led redistricting.
McBath’s Triumphant Return to the 6th District
McBath’s reelection comes after a fierce campaign against Republican challenger Jeff Criswell. The Associated Press declared her the winner at 8:18 p.m. EST on Election Day. The 6th District covers areas of metro Atlanta’s northern suburbs, including Forsyth, Dawson, and portions of Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Cherokee counties.
McBath’s victory is particularly notable given the Republican efforts to target her in 2023 with a proposal for a court-ordered new Black majority district, which threatened to eliminate her seat altogether. However, the Congresswoman prevailed in a primary against a Democratic incumbent the following year, paving the way for her return to the 6th District.
Championing Key Issues for her Constituents
As she reclaims her seat, McBath has plans to continue fighting for the issues most important to her constituents. Chief among these are LGBTQ+ rights, women’s healthcare, and gun safety legislation.
“My fight for equality and justice expands to the community of women in my district where I continue to fight for affordable and quality healthcare,” McBath stated. The Congresswoman, a breast cancer survivor, has staunchly opposed Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, a vital healthcare provider for many in her district.
Additionally, McBath’s dedication to gun safety measures stems from a personal tragedy. After her son was fatally shot in 2012, the Congresswoman has become one of Congress’ foremost voices for stricter gun regulations, sponsoring legislation such as universal background checks and red flag laws.
Building on a Legacy of Advocacy
McBath’s reelection victory is a testament to her unwavering commitment to her constituents and the causes she has championed throughout her political career. As she returns to the 6th District, the Congresswoman vows to continue her fight for the rights and wellbeing of all her constituents, from LGBTQ+ individuals to women and victims of gun violence.
With her decisive win, McBath solidifies her position as a respected and influential voice in the U.S. House of Representatives, poised to make a lasting impact on the issues that matter most to the people of North Atlanta.
