Delaware State University boldly steps into the spotlight as the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to launch a Division 1 women’s wrestling program. The groundbreaking announcement, made in November, marks a significant milestone in collegiate sports history.
Historic Partnership Brings Women’s Wrestling to HBCU Level
Through collaboration with the HBCU Wrestling Initiative, Delaware State secured $1.25 million for program development. This partnership paves the way for a new era in women’s collegiate wrestling.
Athletic Director Alecia Shields emphasizes the program’s significance: “The partnership with HBCU Wrestling gives our women student-athletes a platform to compete, grow, and inspire others. We are excited for this new chapter and the impact it will have for years to come.”
Olympic Legacy Shapes Program’s Future
Delaware State’s wrestling heritage runs deep. Toccara Montgomery, the first Black woman to represent the United States in Olympic wrestling at the 2004 Games, stands as a proud alumna.
“Seeing Delaware State launch the first-ever Division 1 women’s wrestling team at an HBCU is a powerful moment that feels like the realization of a dream,” Montgomery shares. Her recent camp at DSU revealed tremendous enthusiasm among athletic staff and community members.
Strategic Timing Aligns with NCAA Championships
The program’s inaugural season will commence in 2025-26, perfectly timed with women’s wrestling’s anticipated elevation to NCAA championship status.
Executive Director of HBCU Wrestling, Jahi Jones, explains: “The timing couldn’t have been better. Having a full year to get a coach in place and recruit athletes while being part of the inaugural championship is huge.”
Breaking Barriers and Creating Opportunities
Delaware State previously hosted wrestling until 2009, when financial and compliance challenges forced its discontinuation. Now, while Morgan State revives men’s wrestling, DSU emerges as the sole HBCU with a women’s program.
Jones emphasizes the broader impact: “This announcement is not only about wrestling; it’s about expanding access to life-changing opportunities. We’ve built a foundation that allows young women to succeed, thrive, and lead in an environment where they feel seen, valued, and loved.”
