Mattel is marking International Women’s Day in a truly historic way. For the very first time, the company behind one of the world’s most iconic toy brands is launching the Barbie™ Dream Team — a celebration of trailblazing women who have made groundbreaking contributions across their industries. Leading the charge is none other than Serena Williams, tennis legend, entrepreneur, and global inspiration.
The announcement arrives just ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, and it signals something bigger than a product launch. It is a statement about what women have accomplished and what the next generation of girls can still achieve.
Barbie’s First-Ever Dream Team Honors Global Trailblazers
Mattel’s Barbie Dream Team is a first of its kind. The initiative brings together a group of remarkable women from around the world, each representing excellence in their respective fields. Alongside Serena Williams, the Dream Team includes Regina Sirvent Alvarado from Mexico, a professional race car driver, and Smriti Mandhana from India, the first Indian woman cricketer to score a century in all three formats — T20, Test, and ODI.
Each honoree will be commemorated with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll modeled in their likeness. The celebration also includes special Barbie Dream Days retail experiences and the debut of Barbie Dream Fest, a multi-day fan event that puts these women’s achievements front and center. Since its inception in 1959, the Barbie brand has highlighted more than 100 women across industries — and this Dream Team represents the next bold chapter in that legacy.
Serena Williams’ Barbie Doll Reflects Her Power and Business Identity
Serena’s custom Barbie doll is more than just a collectible — it is a portrait of who she has become beyond the tennis court. The doll features a black-and-white blazer and her signature curly hair, capturing the poise and confidence that have defined her transition from sports champion to business powerhouse.

That business identity is well earned. Back in 2014, Serena launched Serena Ventures, her own venture capital firm that has since backed over 60 companies. The firm’s portfolio includes fintech leaders like Propel and Cointracker, as well as innovative brands such as Daily Harvest and MasterClass. Notably, 54% of the portfolio supports women-led businesses, 47% focuses on Black entrepreneurs, and a remarkable 79% of the firm’s funding goes toward underrepresented groups, including emerging Latino entrepreneurs. Her work through Serena Ventures is a direct extension of the values she lives by.
Serena Williams Speaks on Inspiration, Courage, and Empowering Girls Everywhere
When Serena speaks about what this recognition means to her, she brings it back to something deeply personal. Reflecting on the women who shaped her, she shared: “I have always drawn inspiration from the powerful women in my life — from my mom, sisters, and daughters to the dolls in my toy box growing up. Now, I’m thrilled to be honored alongside this incredible group of female changemakers as part of the Barbie Dream Team.”
She also made clear what she hopes this moment does for the girls watching. “Just as so many women have empowered me to turn my fear into courage,” Williams continued, “I hope we can do the same for girls everywhere — to encourage them to pick up a racquet, become an entrepreneur, or follow any dream that lights them up.” Those words carry the full weight of a career built on breaking barriers and refusing to be defined by anyone else’s expectations.
Mattel’s International Women’s Day Celebration Goes Beyond the Doll
The Barbie Dream Team launch is just one part of a much larger celebration. Mattel is running Barbie Dream Days, a global event featuring limited-time offers on Barbie dolls and accessories at major U.S. retailers including Walmart, Amazon, and Target from March 8 to 15. Additionally, Barbie is amplifying female voices through collaborations with six female-founded brands spanning beauty, fashion, and beverages.
Those partnerships include the Barbie x Besita Boots collection, a vintage-inspired apparel line with Unique Vintage, a mindfulness beverage brand called Moment, and collaborations with FHI Heat, Stoney Clover Lane, and GK. Each partnership was intentionally chosen to reflect the strength and individuality of women in different spaces.
Nathan Baynard, Vice President and Head of Barbie at Mattel, summed up the spirit behind it all: “Barbie has always championed the belief that girls can be anything. This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to expand that legacy with the launch of our Barbie Dream Team, honoring extraordinary global trailblazers like Serena Williams.”
Barbie Dream Fest Brings the Celebration to Life in Fort Lauderdale
The festivities will reach their peak at Barbie Dream Fest, a first-ever fan festival taking place from March 27 to 29 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The event promises inspiring speakers, immersive experiences, and a deep dive into the evolution and legacy of the Barbie brand — all in one place.
Serena Williams will be among the featured speakers, joined by Angel Reese, Dr. Swati Mohan, and Madison Marilla. Together, they represent a cross-section of achievement that speaks directly to the Dream Team’s mission: showing girls that greatness comes in many different forms. Tickets are currently available at BarbieDreamFest.com.
For Serena, being part of this moment is clearly about more than recognition. It is about continuing a cycle of empowerment — from the women who inspired her, to the girls who will one day look at her Barbie doll and decide that they, too, can be anything.
