A Pioneer in Celebrating Feminine Power
Andrea Dumebi Iyamah is a trailblazing fashion designer spearheading a new wave of creators whose womenswear designs exude immense feminine strength.
Her eponymous brand, Andrea Iyamah, epitomizes this ethos – making bold sartorial statements that transcend style and elegance.
An Authentic African Voice
Iyamah founded her label out of a need for authentic African representation in the global fashion landscape. Reminiscing, she said:
“I remember going into one of the high-end department stores with my mum and wondering why African brands were not represented. This experience…was to create a brand of African heritage that will be stocked in various retail outlets across the world.”
Intricate Designs Accentuating the Female Form
The Andrea Iyamah aesthetic is distinguished by intricate fluidity and warmth. Every design emanates elegance and sensuality, intentionally crafted to make women feel empowered.
“It’s extremely intentional that we make women feel first before they look…It is not designed to change who you are but to illuminate who you already are,” Iyamah explained.
Sculptural techniques like draping and ruffles artfully accentuate the female form.
From Swimwear Beginnings to a Formidable Empire
Iyamah’s fashion journey began at 17 with a swimwear brand in Canada. Social media catalyzed expansion into ready-to-wear, bridal, and shoes – amassing flagship stores in Lagos and New York along the way.
Her mother’s influence and an early tailoring apprenticeship ignited Iyamah’s passion for design. She revealed:
“I learnt everything from making baby clothes to pattern cutting before proceeding to adult clothing. It was a great learning experience and really equipped me with the basics.”
An Inspirational Sisterhood
Beyond fashion, Iyamah has built an inspirational community celebrating women worldwide who wear her pieces.
“Sometimes I go on holiday and always smile when I see women in our pieces…This allows for you to continue to be inspired and see opportunities for further growth,” she told ESSENCE.
