Emmy-nominated makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff-Kendricks transformed career setbacks into a thriving beauty empire. Her journey spans from MAC cosmetics counter to launching a successful clean beauty brand.
From Department Store Beginnings to Celebrity Acclaim
Sheriff-Kendricks built her 20-year beauty career starting at a MAC counter in Macy’s. Her family background in beauty and performance arts provided a natural foundation.
A pivotal moment came after losing her MAC position. A chance meeting with fellow artist Wilbert Ramos led to a position with Laura Mercier.
Her big break arrived when she secured Diddy as her first celebrity client. This opened doors to working with stars like Alicia Keys and Rihanna.
Hollywood Success and Emmy Recognition
Sheriff-Kendricks earned two Emmy nominations for her work on the hit show Empire. She created Cookie Lyon’s signature looks across six seasons.
Her portfolio expanded to include Academy Award-nominated film Hidden Figures and various high-profile projects. She also collaborated with luxury brands like Dior.
These achievements positioned her as a sought-after expert for red-carpet events and product development. Her influence grew throughout the entertainment industry.
Overcoming Adversity to Launch Beauty Empire
2012 marked a challenging year when trademark issues ended her first beauty line. A serious car accident followed, sidelining her for nearly a year.
The pandemic in 2020 sparked her entrepreneurial comeback. She launched Day & Night magnetic lashes, supported by friend Taraji P. Henson’s social media promotion.
Ashunta Sheriff Beauty now offers 40+ clean, cruelty-free products. Her line appears on Academy Award red carpets and receives features in Allure magazine.
Empowering Future Generations
Sheriff-Kendricks and husband Corr Kendricks prioritize creating opportunities for their eight children. Her daughter Nami started as a costume assistant on Empire.
“We don’t get in this position in Hollywood to not pass down the benefits to our children,” she emphasizes. Her success enables smoother paths for the next generation.
She advocates for collaboration among Black female entrepreneurs. “There’s no diminishing me by uplifting you,” reflects her commitment to community support.
