Stigma Around ‘Geriatric Pregnancies’ Raises Alarms
Ayesha Curry is using her voice to challenge outdated stereotypes about pregnancy after 30. The soon-to-be mother of four recently opened up to People about the “alarming and wild” experience of being labeled with a “geriatric pregnancy” at age 34.
“I’m in my 30s, and so there’s all this paperwork referring to the experience as a ‘geriatric pregnancy’ and all the concerns that come along with that,” Curry said. “Many women in their 30s and 40s are going through this for the first time, and being told you’re ‘old’ feels alarming and wild.”
While advanced maternal-age pregnancies do carry some increased risks, Curry believes the stigmatizing language needs an update to respect the modern realities of family planning.
“I think the narrative needs to be shifted a little bit,” the actress and entrepreneur stated.
Relying on Her Village During Pregnancy Journey
This will be Curry’s final pregnancy after daughters Riley and Ryan, and son Canon with husband Steph Curry. She has taken a new perspective, slowing down to savor every moment while relying on her support system.
“I was really stubborn in my earlier pregnancies,” Curry admitted. “And that hurt me in the end. It made things hard on me. I had to learn to put my pride aside and realize it was okay to take help, to have people around me help, and to not shy away from it.”
She hopes to inspire others to “build a village” for their own children through this pivotal life chapter.
Celebrating New Life Amidst Outdated Terms
Curry covered Sweet July’s recent “Village Issue,” stunning with her baby bump while announcing the exciting family news. Celebrity friends like Gabrielle Union and Ciara flooded the comments with congratulations.
While she embraces this new addition, Curry advocates for updated pregnancy terminology that avoids shaming women – instead celebrating the miracle of birth at any age.
“There’s something that needs to be more nuanced when it comes to women, their age, and conversations around having children,” she proclaimed.
