Beyoncé has revealed she completely self-funded the launch of her groundbreaking new haircare brand, Cécred.
The music icon constructed the company entirely “from the ground up” without any outside investors, a pioneering business move for an African American female entrepreneur.
6 Years Perfecting Science-Backed Formulas
In an interview with Essence, Beyoncé explained she spent 6 years meticulously developing Cécred’s product formulas and only brought the brand to market once completely satisfied with their scientific rigor.
“It was important to decide where we invested in our formulations,” she stated. “I built this from the ground up and funded it myself.”
She prioritized “results and the absolute best science” over rushing products to shelves or pleasing prospective investors chasing profits over inclusivity.
Wanted Products to Work for All Hair Types
As a Black business leader, developing products suited for textured hair and communities of color was central to Cécred’s identity from the start.
“Black women in general are the last to be included in testing. We are often prescribed things based on studies we were not included in,” said the icon.
After extensive R&D and consumer testing, she believes Cécred’s formulas now support healthy hair for women of all backgrounds. The brand also intends to help “dispel hair myths and misconceptions.”
Self-Funding Allows Creative Freedom
By retaining full creative control and self-funding Cécred over 6 years, Beyoncé resisted pressure to conform to investor expectations. This freedom allowed her to stay true to the brand’s core mission – creating inclusive, science-backed haircare products.
Cécred now stands as a pioneering example of what Black female entrepreneurs can achieve independently. Beyoncé is leading the way in upending traditional perceptions of who can succeed in business.
“Now we have created something that celebrates healthy hair for all women, including us,” she declared. “I’m always honored to invest in us.”
