WNBA superstar Brittney Griner announces a major career shift with her move to the Atlanta Dream. The one-year deal marks her first team change after spending 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury.
Historic Move Reshapes WNBA Landscape
“Free agency has been everything I wanted it to be,” Griner shared through an Instagram video. The announcement features her new Dream teammates Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, and Jordin Canada.
The decision comes after a remarkable tenure with the Mercury. Griner led Phoenix with franchise records in blocks (812), rebounds (2,322), and field goal percentage (56.2%).
Decorated Career Enters New Chapter
Griner’s impressive resume includes 10 All-Star selections and a 2014 WNBA championship. She collected six All-WNBA Team honors and seven All-Defensive Team selections throughout her Phoenix career.
The 34-year-old center averaged 17.8 points and 6.6 rebounds last season. Her consistent performance helped the Mercury reach the playoffs with a 19-21 record.
Olympic Success and Team Dynamics
The move separates Griner from long-time teammate Diana Taurasi after 11 seasons together. They shared multiple Olympic gold medals, including their recent triumph at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“There’s no one like her in women’s basketball,” Taurasi previously praised Griner. Their partnership yielded significant success, including the Mercury’s 2014 championship.
Future Outlook and Team Impact
Griner approaches this transition with optimism. “This is a rebrand now, I get to show them something different,” she explains about joining the Dream.
The official signing becomes effective on February 1, when WNBA contracts can be formalized. Meanwhile, Phoenix moves forward by acquiring five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas in a separate trade.
