“I thank my colleagues, along with the many other great women artists of color who came before me,” Weems remarked. She acknowledged those who “widened the path and took the heat” without recognition.

The National Medal of Arts, established in 1984, celebrates outstanding contributions to American arts. Twenty distinguished artists received recognition during this year’s ceremony.

Weems’s portfolio spans photography, text, audio, installation, video, and performance art. Her work consistently addresses race, gender, social injustice, and economic inequity throughout American history.
Storytelling remains central to her artistic expression. She skillfully weaves themes of yearning, loss, and cultural identity into complex narratives. Her achievements include becoming the first Black woman to hold a Guggenheim Museum retrospective.

Major institutions worldwide have showcased Weems’s art, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate Modern. Her work appears in prestigious venues across North America and Europe.
Her numerous accolades include the MacArthur Fellowship and the US Department of State’s Medal of Arts. She also holds the Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize Fellowship and several other distinguished awards.
