A Trailblazer in Sports and Fashion
Coach Sydney Carter, a retired WNBA and overseas professional basketball player, is breaking barriers by seamlessly blending her passion for sports leadership and fashion.
In an exclusive interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, the former guard opens up about her journey and how she’s empowering women in sports through her unique approach.
From the Court to the Sidelines
Carter’s illustrious career began at Texas A&M University, where she won an NCAA title in 2011, propelling her into the WNBA in 2012.
After a successful professional stint with teams like the Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, and Atlanta Dream, she transitioned into coaching roles at her alma mater and now serves as the assistant coach and director of player development at the University of Texas.
“For me to be back here after I’ve played at a completely different school in Texas, a rival school in Texas, and then had a pro career, it’s always been a passion of mine to help young women. So, I feel like I’ve always been a leader,” Carter explains.
Embracing Style and Confidence
Dubbed “The Pink Pants Coach,” Carter made headlines by wearing pink leather pants during a Cancer Awareness game night in the 2021-2022 season. Despite facing criticism, she used the attention to showcase how women can lead and be powerful while embracing their personal style.
“Now I just think a lot of people see the confidence that I wear and then they see the clothes because I just show up as me and I’m not apologizing for whatever,” Carter states.
Her unapologetic approach to fashion and leadership has inspired women to embrace their authentic selves and challenge societal norms.
Witnessing the Growth of Women’s Sports
Carter’s journey has coincided with the rising popularity of women’s sports, particularly women’s basketball. With increased viewership, funding, and fan engagement, she believes it’s vital to “keep the needle moving” and continue advocating for equal opportunities and representation.
“I mean, it’s fantastic. You’re giving women the platform now. You’re seeing so many things about the women’s game that we already knew,” Carter says about the increased interest in women’s sports.
Her leadership and influence extend beyond the court, as she aims to foster a positive impact on student-athletes and shift the norms in the workforce on behalf of women in sports leadership roles.
