Philadelphia Native Achieves Major Milestone
Quinta Brunson, the Emmy award-winning creator, producer, writer, and star of the hit series “Abbott Elementary,” is set to receive a momentous honor from her alma mater.
Temple University announced that the Philadelphia native will be awarded an honorary degree during the institution’s 137th Commencement ceremony on May 8, 2024.
“We are thrilled to recognize Quinta Brunson for her remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to her craft,” said Temple President Richard M. Englert. “Quinta embodies the spirit of Temple’s commitment to creativity, innovation and social impact. Her talent, authenticity and trailblazing spirit inspire us all.”
Trailblazing Career Achievements
Brunson’s rise to fame has been marked by a series of groundbreaking accomplishments. She made history as the first Black woman to receive three Emmy nominations and the second Black woman to win an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her critically acclaimed show, Abbott Elementary.
The series follows a group of passionate teachers in a Philadelphia public school, determined to help their students succeed against all odds.
Honoring a Media Luminary
In addition to receiving an honorary degree, Brunson will be honored with the 2024 Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award by Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication. This prestigious award recognizes her as a media luminary whose work inspires students.
“I am simply honored,” Brunson said in response to the recognition from her alma mater.
Roots at Temple University
Brunson’s journey at Temple University began as a first-year student at the Klein College, where she joined Temple University Television’s (TUTV) first student-produced comedy variety show, Temple Smash, before heading to Southern California to pursue her dreams.
Beyond her creative endeavors, Brunson has significantly impacted digital spaces, using her platform to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the entertainment industry.
Her authentic storytelling and relatable humor have resonated with audiences worldwide, earning her a dedicated following and numerous accolades.
Commencement Celebration
Temple University’s Commencement ceremony will celebrate the achievements of graduating students and honor the contributions of Brunson and other distinguished guests.
Each year, the university bestows honorary degrees upon esteemed figures, with past recipients including Bishop Desmond Tutu, U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, and basketball Coach Dawn Staley.
