Harlem’s Fashion Row (HFR), an agency bridging designers of color with the world’s most recognizable brands, has teamed up with global brand Kate Spade New York and its parent company Tapestry, Inc. to participate in a three-year partnership for its annual HBCU Fashion Summit.
Born in 2020, the Summit provides students with tools, resources and expertise from some of the industry’s leading professionals. The partnership was created to help in building more diversity, equity and inclusion in the fashion industry.
“With Tapestry’s overwhelming support for our core initiative, to holistically prepare Gen-Z for fashion’s workforce with comprehensive programming, I’m confident, together, we can provide scholars with an opportunity to thrive in an incredibly transformative externship experience, the industry is vying for change, but we can only be most innovative when Black talent is included,” said Brandice Daniel, CEO and founder of Harlem’s Fashion Row.
This year’s Summit targets students at Bowie State University and will team them up with Kate Spade’s designers and executives. State-of-the-art courses will provide first-hand, exclusive access to a team of experts at Kate Spade and some course selections include: The History of Kate Spade and Tapestry; Kate Spade Accessory Design 101; Concept, Print, and Color; How To Build the Bones of A Brand; RTW, Shoes, Jewelry, Eyewear; Materials For Accessory Design; and Mental Health and The Fashion Industry. Powerhouse fashion brands Coach and Stuart Weitzman will also participate in the program and offer tips in the trade.
