Her first runway show, held on September 6, showcased a collection that celebrates African artistry and Black femininity.
Young Designer Makes Waves at NYFW
At an age when many are still finding their path, Michelle Adepoju is already leaving her mark on the fashion industry. Her NYFW debut was a moment of pride and accomplishment for the Nigerian designer.
“It felt both beautiful and overwhelming. I was a little nervous, but I knew my work deserved to be on that stage,” Michelle shared with HelloBeautiful after her show. She added, “The experience was deeply fulfilling.”
KÍLÈNTÁR’s Spring-Summer 2025 Collection: A Tribute to African Craftsmanship
Michelle’s runway collection, titled “Mama Ìbẹ́ta,” was a powerful homage to African craftsmanship. The show, presented by The Green Show and Mastercard, highlighted KÍLÈNTÁR’s commitment to ethical fashion practices.
Each garment in the collection was handwoven, dyed, and beaded by skilled women artisans. The pieces told a compelling story of culture, heritage, sustainability, and style.
Inspiration Behind the Collection: Celebrating Women Artisans
When asked about her inspiration, Michelle explained, “I’ve been deeply inspired by the incredible women artisans I’ve met across West Africa. Their dedication to preserving traditional techniques has empowered me both personally and professionally.”
She also credited her mother as a source of inspiration. “My mother has always been a pillar of strength, teaching me resilience and grace—lessons that stay with me every day,” Michelle shared.
A Vibrant Showcase of Black Beauty and Femininity
The Spring and Summer 2025 collection radiated Black beauty and femininity in all its forms. Bright colors, flowing fabrics, and slinky silhouettes dominated the runway.
The collection’s versatility was evident, with pieces suitable for vacations, carefree days, or moments of self-care. The finale garments, a series of intricately beaded column dresses with sheer underlay, were true showstoppers.
Future Aspirations: Dressing Celebrity Icons
With a promising fashion future ahead, Michelle’s ambitions extend beyond the runway. She looks forward to dressing celebrity it girls and powerhouse Black women.
Michelle revealed her dream clients include Solange Knowles, Michelle Obama, and Lupita Nyong’o. She explained these women “are not only fashion-forward but also represent strength, authenticity, and cultural pride.”
