Acclaimed Actress and Director to Address Spelman’s Class of 2024
Angela Bassett, the critically acclaimed actress and director, is set to inspire Spelman College’s graduating class of 2024 as the keynote speaker for the prestigious institution’s 137th Commencement Ceremony this May.
Notably, the legendary performer will also be honored with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree by the esteemed historically Black college.
“Spelman College is honored to have acclaimed actress and director Angela Bassett to bring words of inspiration to our graduating Class of 2024,” said Spelman College President Helene D. Gayle, M.D., MPH. “Her work has had a tremendous impact both on and off the screen and serves as an example for our students to lead in their own spaces.”
Bassett’s Illustrious Career and Accolades
Renowned for her portrayal of bold, empowered women in iconic films like What’s Love Got to Do With It?, Black Panther, Waiting To Exhale, and Malcolm X, Bassett has garnered numerous accolades throughout her illustrious career.
With an impressive 16 NAACP Image Awards, two Golden Globes, a BET Award, and, most recently, an honorary Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards in 2024, her achievements are a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication.
Spelman Honors Trailblazing Women
In addition to Bassett, Spelman College will bestow honorary degrees upon other remarkable women, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first African American woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Moreover, Atlanta journalist Rose Scott will be honored with the National Community Service Award during the commencement ceremony.
“We are equally honored to have a slate of strong Black women join us for our weekend ceremonies, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Atlanta community icon Rose Scott and the esteemed Reverend Dr. Yvette Flunder,” added President Gayle in a statement. “We look forward to them inspiring our graduates, their families and the Spelman community.”
Spelman’s Commencement Festivities
The commencement activities at Spelman College will commence on Saturday, May 18, and conclude on Sunday, May 19, at the Georgia International Convention Center, providing a fitting celebration for the remarkable achievements of the graduating class and the esteemed honorees.
