NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson, alongside Board Chairman Leon W. Russell, honored Harris at an exclusive dinner event.
The recognition celebrates Harris’s groundbreaking achievements and dedication to justice. She becomes part of an elite group of honorees who have shaped American history. The award highlights her role as a barrier-breaking leader in American politics.
Kamala Harris Joins Prestigious List of Spingarn Medal Recipients
Harris now stands among legendary figures who have received this distinguished honor. Previous recipients include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and W.E.B. Du Bois. The medal recognizes individuals for their exceptional contributions to justice, equity, and public service.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Spingarn Medal — an award whose legacy reflects the brilliance, sacrifice, and determination of generations who paved the way for progress,” Harris stated. She emphasized the profound inspiration she draws from being counted among such distinguished recipients. The honor carries special meaning because it comes from the NAACP, one of America’s oldest civil rights organizations.
Historic Vice Presidency Recognized for Breaking Barriers
Harris made history as the 49th Vice President of the United States. She became the first woman and first Black American to hold this office. Her trailblazing leadership exemplifies the spirit of the Spingarn Medal.
“It is a true privilege to recognize Vice President Kamala Harris as this year’s Spingarn Medal recipient,” said Derrick Johnson. He praised her unwavering commitment to justice as embodying the essence of this honor. Johnson noted that her legacy of breaking barriers and championing equity will inspire generations.
NAACP’s Highest Honor Celebrates Commitment to Equality
The Spingarn Medal represents more than a century of recognizing excellence. The award honors those who advance freedom and equality in America. Harris expressed particular pride that the recognition comes from the NAACP.
“That it comes from the NAACP, one of our nation’s oldest and greatest champions of freedom and equality, makes this honor all the more meaningful,” Harris said. The organization has been fighting for civil rights since its founding. Its highest honor reflects decades of advocacy and progress.
Recent Book Release Follows Award Ceremony
Harris released her latest book, 107 Days, on September 23. The publication came just days before the Spingarn Medal ceremony. She previously authored The Truths We Hold: An American Journey and a children’s book, Superheroes Are Everywhere.
Her first book, Smart on Crime, was published a decade earlier. Last month, she made an unannounced stop at Howard University, her alma mater. The visit was part of her 18-city book tour across the country.
