Former Vice President Kamala Harris broke her post-election silence on Thursday with a powerful message to Black women leaders. Speaking at the Leading Women Defined Summit in Dana Point, California, Harris called for unity and courage during challenging political times.
Former VP Emerges with Message of Resilience and Sisterhood
Kamala Harris has stayed largely out of the public eye since losing the November 2024 election to Donald Trump. Her appearance at the Leading Women Defined Summit marked her return to public speaking.
“This is a moment in time where we all need to be in rooms like this to remind ourselves that we have a sisterhood that is strong,” Harris said. “No one can take our identity or existence from us — because we won’t let them.”
Black Women’s Leadership Summit Provides Platform for Unity
The Leading Women Defined Summit, founded by former BET CEO Debra Lee, brings together influential Black women. The annual gathering creates space for discussions on leadership, policy, and empowerment.
In a video of her remarks shared by MSNBC and Huffpost, Harris emphasized collective action. Her speech acknowledged the current political challenges while inspiring attendees to remain steadfast in their values and vision.
Harris Addresses Political Realities Without “I Told You So”
“There were many things we knew were gonna happen,” Harris said, referencing warnings from her 2024 campaign. “I’m not here to say I told you so,” she added, drawing applause and cheers from the audience.
The former Vice President spoke candidly about the changing landscape under Trump’s second term. “This is a very different time,” she noted. “A lot has changed.”
Contagious Courage Needed in Face of Fear and Silence
Harris highlighted concerning trends of silence and fear in response to policy rollbacks. “We are seeing people stay quiet. We are seeing organizations stay quiet. We are seeing capitulation to clearly unconstitutional threats,” she observed.
Her message turned toward hope and action through solidarity. “Fear is contagious… but courage is contagious too,” Harris told the gathering of influential Black women leaders.
Trump Administration Actions Prompt Call for Continued Activism
Less than 100 days into his second term, President Trump has already made significant policy changes. His administration has dismantled diversity programs, approved mass federal layoffs, and imposed global tariffs causing market turmoil.
Despite these political realities, Harris emphasized that Black women must continue their leadership roles. Throughout American history, Black women have often spearheaded movements for positive social change.
Black Women’s Power Recognized as Essential for Future Progress
“There’s great power in this room. And yes, the world is watching,” Harris said in her closing remarks. She reminded attendees of their broader responsibility beyond self-interest.
“But more importantly, there are people counting on us—to be kind, to be fierce, and to be together,” Harris concluded. Her message underscored the importance of community and collective strength in navigating challenging political times.
