From a college dorm room friendship to a thriving franchise, Spelman alumnae Kelli M. Coleman and Anika J. Odegbo have transformed the nail care industry. Their venture, The TEN Nail Bar, has grown into a multi-million-dollar empire since 2016.
Two Spelman Sisters Launch Revolutionary Beauty Brand
The journey began when Coleman and Odegbo spotted a gap in Detroit’s beauty market. Both lived in major cities and experienced high-end nail care.
“We wanted to bring the elevated nail salon experience we saw in other cities to our community,” says Odegbo. Their vision went beyond beauty services.
Detroit’s Beauty Renaissance Meets Community Empowerment
The timing proved perfect as Detroit emerged from bankruptcy. The city buzzed with reinvestment opportunities downtown, creating an ideal launch pad.
The entrepreneurs focused on building more than a nail salon. They created a space prioritizing both customer and employee well-being in urban Detroit.
HBCU Foundation Shapes Business Success
Their Spelman College experience played a crucial role in shaping their business approach. The HBCU environment fostered collaboration over competition.
“At Spelman, we were nurtured and encouraged to believe that nothing is out of reach,” Coleman reflects. This mindset fueled their entrepreneurial journey.
Scaling Success Through Franchising
The duo always aimed for growth, eventually choosing franchising as their expansion strategy. This approach allows others to step into entrepreneurship.
“We loved the idea of growing our footprint while sharing our blueprint for success,” explains Coleman. Local ownership ensures strong community connections.
Legacy Building and Future Impact
Both women come from entrepreneurial families, understanding business ownership’s value for generational wealth. They’ve employed hundreds of Black and Brown women.
“If an idea was given to you, I believe that’s divine. It’s yours to execute, so go do it,” Odegbo advises aspiring entrepreneurs.
