Biden Welcomes National Champions to the White House
President Joe Biden welcomed the University of South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team to the White House on Tuesday. The visit celebrated their third national championship and second in three years. Biden praised the team’s incredible 38-0 undefeated season.
“For the record, and this is the God’s truth: I picked you to win,” Biden quipped during the ceremony. The President highlighted the team’s remarkable achievement as just the 10th team to go undefeated in women’s college basketball history.
Coach Dawn Staley’s Leadership Shines Bright
Coach Dawn Staley, a Philadelphia native, received special recognition from Biden. “I know why you’re so good: You got a girl from Philly running it,” he joked. Staley’s leadership has transformed the program since taking over in 2008.
Staley used the platform to deliver a powerful message about unity and progress. She referenced South Carolina’s journey, including the removal of the Confederate flag from the state capitol. “Today, my staff, my team, and I stand here embodying diversity, inclusiveness, and unity,” Staley declared.
Gamecocks’ Dominance Reflected in Championship Game
The White House celebration highlighted the team’s dominance in the championship game against Iowa. Biden noted that nine players recorded double-digit minutes, with four scoring in double figures. The Gamecocks’ bench outscored Iowa’s 37-0.
The final game drew massive viewership, peaking at over 24 million viewers. Biden remarked, “I don’t think anybody is watching men’s basketball anymore,” underscoring the growing popularity of women’s sports.
A Legacy of Empowerment and Inspiration
Staley’s impact extends beyond the court. She shared how she’s paying forward the support she received from Carolyn Peck, the first Black female coach to win a Division I women’s basketball national championship. After winning her first title, Staley sent pieces of the championship net to every Black woman head coach in Division I basketball.
This gesture symbolizes the team’s broader impact on women’s sports and representation. Biden emphasized, “When young girls see their idols, they see the power of your example.”
