Screenwriter and producer Onyx Keesha’s prophetic dream about breast cancer became a life-changing reality. Her journey transformed from a devastating diagnosis into a powerful mission of advocacy for Black women’s health.
A Dream That Became Reality: Early Warning Signs
At age 32, Keesha discovered concerning lumps in her breast. Despite receiving a clear mammogram, she later experienced a vivid dream warning her about breast cancer.
“I had a dream, and in my dream, I knew I had breast cancer,” Keesha revealed. “I’m like, ‘did I manifest this for my life? Or did I have the sight to know this was going to be part of my journey?'”
From Television Success to Health Crisis
While building her career in television and theater, Keesha neglected follow-up screenings. Her fast-paced lifestyle left little room for self-care or regular health checkups.
Eventually, another dream prompted her to conduct a self-examination. She discovered a small mass in her breast at age 40. The diagnosis came on New Year’s Day, confirming her worst fears.
Turning Personal Pain into Purpose
Following her diagnosis, Keesha authored two influential books. “Pink Lemonade” helps parents discuss breast cancer with their children. “Facing it Together” provides strategies for survivors and their support systems.
“The book was born out of my wanting to give tools to the support system,” Keesha explained. “It’s very hard for the diagnosed person to express even what the doctor told them.”
Breaking Barriers in Black Women’s Health
Research shows Black women face a 40% higher mortality rate from breast cancer compared to white women. Keesha now advocates for better healthcare access and education.
“Black women, we have to be the ones to advocate, educate, and dispel those myths so we can save other black women,” she emphasized. Her personal story proves breast cancer can strike without family history.
Redefining Success Through Self-Care
Today, Keesha prioritizes her well-being through regular exercise and mindful living. Her survivor journey has reshaped her definition of success.
“Now, I am living my dream, and it’s because I put myself first,” she shared. Her story continues to inspire and educate others about the importance of proactive health care.
