Tennis legend Venus Williams launches a groundbreaking initiative to boost women’s financial independence. The campaign will award $500,000 to 50 deserving recipients.
Tennis Champion Spearheads Women’s Financial Empowerment Initiative
Williams has partnered with SoFi and Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink for the “Give Her Credit” campaign. The initiative celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.
“At an early age, I had clear ambitions and drive to be the best,” Williams shared. “But I soon learned of the inequalities I would face.”
Historic Progress in Women’s Financial Rights
The Equal Credit Opportunity Act marked a turning point for women’s financial independence. Today, 90% of women manage household finances, and single women outpace single men in homeownership.
“Imagine not being able to access credit as a woman,” Williams told PopSugar. “These are rights my mom didn’t have growing up.”
Personal Journey Shapes Financial Advocacy
Williams transformed her approach to money after a revealing shopping experience in Italy. This wake-up call taught her the importance of discussing money openly.
Her mother’s advice to “never live beyond your means” still guides her today. Despite her success, Williams banked her first big check without spending it.
Champion for Equal Pay and Financial Education
Williams made history in 2007 as the first woman to receive equal pay at Wimbledon. Her advocacy for equal pay continues through this new initiative.
The “Give Her Credit” campaign offers grants up to $10,000 each. Applications remain open from October 15 to November 13, with winners announced in January 2025.
