Pioneering AI Research Institute Launches at NCCU
North Carolina Central University received $1 million to establish the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research. This marks the first AI institute at any Historically Black College and University in America.
Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon emphasized the institute’s role in preparing future AI leaders. “This partnership will prepare our students with the tools and knowledge to lead the AI field, while developing technologies that benefit society at large,” she stated.
Honoring Dr. Harris’ Legacy Through Cybersecurity Education
Stillman College’s $1 million donation honors Dr. Kevin Lamar Harris, who passed away on October 5. Harris founded the HBCU Cybersecurity Clinic in 2022 and secured a previous $500,000 Google grant.
“Dr. Harris played a pivotal role in Google’s decision to provide $500,000 to Stillman College,” said Maab Ibrahim, Google’s cybersecurity lead. His work inspired funding for additional clinics at minority-serving institutions.
Building Inclusive Tech Leadership
Google’s chief diversity officer Melonie Parker stressed the importance of equity in AI development. The investment supports collaboration among HBCUs nationwide.
Stillman College President Dr. Yolanda W. Page pledged to continue Harris’ work. The Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics will carry forward his mission of expanding cybersecurity education across HBCUs.
