Black Entrepreneur Gita Langa Turns Passion for Flowers into Thriving Business
As the cut flower market in Africa and the Middle East continues to boom, Mozambican entrepreneur Gita Langa has carved out a flourishing business enterprise by tapping into her lifelong passion for flowers.
Langa’s company Floural has become a go-to source for beautiful floral arrangements and gifts in Mozambique.
From Passion Project to Thriving Enterprise
Langa’s foray into floriculture began unexpectedly when a desperate friend asked for her help creating a gift for his girlfriend. She took it upon herself to arrange a lovely bouquet, sparking the idea to launch her own flower business.
“On that occasion, I got the idea to open a flower business,” Langa recalled. “It was on a Sunday, there were not too many options in Nampula city, so I decided to go around with him picking some items to prepare a special gift, including flowers.”
Her first arrangement was so impressive that she launched Floural in 2008, initially selling flowers for special occasions like Women’s Day and Valentine’s Day in Nampula.
Entrepreneurship in Her DNA
For Langa, the entrepreneurial drive ran in her blood. Growing up, she watched her father constantly creating new businesses, an inspirational trait that stuck with her.
“I used to play and laugh at my father as he was always creating a new business. One day, I realized that I am just like him. My head never stops, always creating, imagining, dreaming, it’s just unbelievable.”
Expanding Her Floral Empire
In 2018, Langa expanded Floural’s offerings to align with their slogan “More than Flowers.” She introduced aroma diffusers and gift sets to complement the beautiful blooms.
“This was always my vision, to add something else that could make a perfect match with our beautiful flowers,” Langa said.
Just last December, she opened a new storefront in partnership with eyewear brand Mafastela, taking her rapidly growing floral empire to new heights.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Langa, who also works full-time as a global compliance manager, offers this advice:
“Remove the elephant that is blocking your dream. Also, start slowly and don’t compare yourselves to others.”
Her journey exemplifies how transforming a personal passion into a successful business venture is achievable, even in competitive multi-billion dollar industries like floriculture.
