Kamala Harris, the first woman, Black American, and South Asian American U.S. Vice President, will receive the prestigious Chairman’s Award at the 56th NAACP Image Awards. The ceremony, airing live on February 22, celebrates her historic achievements and tireless advocacy for justice and equality.
A Historic Honor for a Trailblazing Leader
The Chairman’s Award recognizes individuals who use their platforms to create meaningful change. Harris, a 2024 EBONY Power 100 cover star, will be honored for her groundbreaking leadership and unwavering commitment to public service. This marks her first major appearance since leaving the White House.
“Vice President Kamala Harris is more than a leader; she is a force of change,” said Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors. Her legacy of courage and compassion has inspired millions, making her a beacon of hope and progress.
Championing Justice and Equality
During her tenure as Vice President, Harris championed critical issues like reproductive rights, gun safety, voting rights, and economic opportunity. She played a key role in achieving record job growth and passing historic legislation on climate, infrastructure, and lower prescription drug costs.
“Her tireless advocacy for the most vulnerable among us has made her a beacon of hope and progress,” Russell added. Harris’s leadership has left an indelible mark on the nation, uplifting marginalized communities and driving systemic change.
A Legacy of Firsts
Harris made history as the first Black and South Asian woman nominated for president by a major party in 2024. She received over 75 million votes in the shortest modern general election campaign, showcasing her widespread appeal and resilience.
“Vice President Harris embodies the power, grace, and unyielding courage that Black women have long brought to the heart of the United States,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. Her historic achievements remind us that Black women’s leadership is transformative.
A Night to Celebrate Excellence
The 56th NAACP Image Awards will air live on February 22 from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The broadcast, extended to 2.5 hours, will celebrate Harris and other trailblazers shaping a more equitable future.
“Vice President Harris is deeply deserving of the NAACP Chairman’s Award for both her historic accomplishments and her incredible legacy of service,” said Scott Mills, president and CEO of BET Media Group. Her recognition is a testament to her enduring impact.
