Landmark Grant Boosts HBCU Development
Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) a historic $25 million grant. The funding targets Project HBCU Capacity Building, focusing on research, operations, and innovation across member institutions.
TMCF will implement vital infrastructure improvements and student support systems. The project aims to create sustainable futures for 54 member schools, including 42 four-year HBCUs.
Dr. Harry L. Williams, TMCF president and CEO, called the grant “monumental” for addressing unique institutional challenges.
Strategic Implementation for Growth
The initiative focuses on three key strategies to enhance HBCU capabilities. Schools will receive improved administrative systems and data collection tools. Professional development programs will strengthen staff expertise.
Member institutions will engage in collaborative learning opportunities. They’ll share resources and strategies to boost enrollment. The project emphasizes cross-campus engagement and shared success.
TMCF’s approach combines immediate support with long-term planning. Schools will benefit from upgraded technology and enhanced research capabilities.
Measurable Impact and Future Vision
TMCF expects significant improvements in institutional capacity over five years. The impact will extend beyond participating schools. The project creates a model for operational excellence.
Ted Maple, Lilly Endowment’s Vice President for education, praised TMCF’s comprehensive support systems. The organization helps students achieve their educational and career goals.
The grant represents a milestone in HBCU development and sustainability. It builds upon TMCF’s established success since its 1987 founding.
